I prefer to headcanon the Lunanoffs less as conspiring chessmasters and more like the Romanovs - in over their heads with a war brewing that they could no more stop than a pebble can dam a waterfall - but we need to talk about the fact that Nightlight - Nightlight, who was sworn to protect the young tsarevich, whose morality is stark black and white, who would never condone the killing of innocents, even for the greater good - is the one who killed them.

Well, the Romanovs were terrible rulers (there is a reason there were revolutions, even if some of it was built on false rumors) so I like to think the Lunanoffs were at least better at being in tune with their people. I don’t know where this idea came in the fandom that they should be portrayed as heartless and awful, but I much prefer something like your idea, where they’re well-intentioned but surrounded by overwhelming circumstances and possibly faults of their own.

And there needs to be stuff digging into how Nightlight is unintentionally responsible for their deaths, because that is interesting, but a bit too dark to probably be discussed in the series proper.

Getting this off my chest

lainathiel:

I know it’s pretty commonly headcanoned that Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians is Slytherin and Merida Dunbroch from Brave is Gryffndor. However, when I recently re-watched Brave, I realized that their Houses are backwards. Merida’s movie may be called ‘brave’ and she certainly is brave, but I’d say her most obvious trait is cunning. Consider: she doesn’t want to get married and, the moment she hears her mother talk about the traditional way her husband is married, she thinks she has a way out of getting married. She comes up with a plan right on the spot and implements it. Then she finds the witch (voiced by Julie Walters, no less!) and immediately thinks of how it can help her. At the end, she even stands up to her father to keep him from killing her mother by mistake. So, in the end, I think Merida is Slytherin.

Jack. on the other hand, is very much a Gryffindor. He’s the guardian of fun, after all. That’s all he wants to do. He doesn’t want to settle down and work. Most of the time, when he fights Pitch, he doesn’t have a set plan in motion. He just charges in and hopes like hell that he does something right. He didn’t even want to be a Guardian at first. He doesn’t show ambition or cunning, so that’s why I think he’s a Gryffindor.

Please keep in mind that this is just my personal opinion on which Houses Merida and Jack should be sorted into. I’m sure others have their own reasons for Sorting them as they do. I just really needed to get this off my chest.

I’m always going back and forth on whether I think Jack should be in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, since I don’t know my House requirements that well, but I’m steadfast in my belief that Merida would go in Slytherin. Not only for the reasons you brought up, but also because I want to destroy the idea that a certain dorm automatically equals evil.
